Cultural exploration starts! Global innovators in Nanjing to dig into China’s heritage

While revitalization, innovation, and preservation of heritages have emerged as a global priority, China’s profound cultural legacy and pioneering approaches are drawing worldwide attention.

Themed with "City · Tower · River", the Digital Heritage - Global Innovator Contest raised curtain on August 2 at Grand Bao’en Temple Ruins Museum in Nanjing. The event held by the museum and supported by UNESCO, is pooling wisdom of innovators from a number of renowned universities, including University College London, Goldsmiths College University of London, Tsinghua University, and Southeast University.

In the startup phase on August 3, participants commenced field studies at Nanjing’s Zhonghua Gate city wall and the Qinhuai River to experience the city’s profound culture and its continuity, exploring modern expression of the time-honored heritage.

Over the following two weeks, the innovators will decode the narratives of heritage through digital technologies, crafting new chapters in cultural preservation.

Nanjing pioneered the world’s first museum-focused heritage hackathon in 2024, attracting 588 creators across the globe to raise proposals on protecting the heritage of Porcelain Tower with digital technologies.

Now the 2025 edition of the innovator contest has amplified the impact, drawing almost 700 applicants from 19 countries. Thirty-one finalists now advance to the final stage in Nanjing, in which they will design an interactive digital installation for the Grand Bao’en Temple Ruins Museum.

Upon this cultural bridge between civilizations, they are also to discover more about China. Watch the video now to witness how these young global innovators are advancing cross-cultural dialogue, and revealing an authentic and multidimensional China to the world.
